The organized strike made by transport groups this Monday has evidently failed to bring transportation at a standstill. Perhaps because of the hard times, most drivers opted to work and go by their regular routine instead of joining the number of protesters. Pinag-Isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytors Nationwide (Piston) has instigated the strike in complaint of the incessant price increase of fuel products.

The protest was aimed to draw the attention of not only the government but also the major suppliers of fuel in the Philippines such as Petron and Pilipinas Shell Corporation.

Another strike was simultaneously held by the Makati Jeepney Operators Association (MJODA) and Liga ng Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas. This one however is for entirely different reasons. Theirs was in protest of the large fines asked from drivers who have failed to follow traffic rules.

The protest although somewhat successful in Makati, failed to elicit a response from the public. The striking drivers in an attempt to further their protest have been trying to convince commuters and fellow drivers alike to join in their campaign. Most of the invitations were ignored as people continued to live their lives.

Commuters from Quezon City hardly felt the ongoing strike as the flow of traffic was decidedly normal.

Another factor contributing to the failed strike was the dispatch of free rides by the Traffic Operations Center to aid stranded commuters. The strike announced beforehand has given the agency ample time to take care of the possible complications resulting from the strike.

Of course, other means of transportation are also available to the public as some have chosen to ride in tricycles and shuttles.

Oddly enough, the protest may have achieved its goal as prices of fuel products decrease. However, it is not yet known whether the amount would remain constant, would gradually go down or would once again shock the public by going up.
