BATANES ULTIMATE TRAVEL GUIDE IN A NUTSHELL
Batanes, a group of 10 islands, 3 of them inhabited, is located 850 kilometers north of Manila. On a clear day, it has been said that Taiwan is visible from Y’ami, the northernmost island. Also on similar fair days, Batanes seems displaced in the tropical zone of Asia, as it famously resembles the highlands of Scotland. The people inhabiting these islands, possibly one of the financially unfortunate Filipinos, are hospitable, kind and generous.
Annually, an average of 8 tropical typhoons finds their way to these islands. Due to this rugged and harsh weather, the homes are built to be tough; made of huge rocks and limestone that are a more than a meter thick as walls.
Although Batanes seems isolated and a danger prone, tourists still flock to these islands. The best time to head here is between the months of March and May, when the weather is still fair and dry. Travel guides to Batanes are easy to find and numerous, although many tourists are able to roam these islands with only the help of the locals.
The beaches of Batanes are mostly filled with pebbles or boulders. Surfing is considered dangerous, however the famous White Beach is generally safe for swimming. Songsong Beach, also known as Boulder Beach at Northern Basco, is beautiful and a must-see.
The island’s national road, called National Highway will lead you to Imnajbu, an inland trail that will take you to Marlboro Country. This can be explored with the aid of a mountain bike that can easily be rented at Basco. The full loop of the highway will take you 8 hours to complete, but is worth the trip.
A dormant volcano, Mount Iraya, can be climbed in 5 hours and can be descended in 3, they view of which is breathtaking, although on most days is secluded by fog and clouds.
Radar Tukon offers magnificent views of the capital of Batanes. Radar Tukon is a former, now abandoned, weather station of the United States, and offers tourists a wonderful 360 degree view.
