One the eastern side of Surigao del Norte lies the famous Siargao Island with its preserved beaches and lush vegetation. However, this piece of land is most known for its strong waters, earning it the title “Surfing Capital of the Philippines”. Siargao Island is home to the world renowned surfing break dubbed “Cloud Nine” which has been included in the Top Surfing Waves over the globe.

Its more than 400 kilometers of land mass in teardrop shape is located about 800 kilometers south east of the country’s capital, Manila. There are also a few neighboring islets surrounding the island. Its reception of great surfing waves can be attributed to the islands location at the edge of the Philippine Trench. Particularly, the waves are pure heaven during the months of August to November with the arrival of habagat monsoon. Although “Cloud 9” is the most recognized, other waves of the same quality can b experienced in the Siargao waters.

Of course, although the island may be famous for its waves, Siargao also offers different attractions raging from snorkeling, island hopping, swimming and other activities. For surfers, the best time to catch the waves in the island is during the yearly Siargao Cup, a surfing competition hosted by Surigao del Norte’s provincial government in which both domestic and international surfers are allowed to participate. The island has become so famous for its waves that a song has been written about it, “Surfin’ in Siargao” by Eddie Florano.

Accommodations are many and varied. If you’re dropping by Siargao for surfing enjoyment, try not to time it during the Siargao Cup as the place can be quite crowded during the event. However, if you prefer meeting new people, then a visit on the island during the Cup would be a great chance. Either way, the waves are waiting.
