Although dubbed as the “Perfect Cone” because of its shape, the Mayon Volcano is undoubtedly dangerous. Considered to be the most active volcano in the Philippines and with 47 explosions credited to its name, this main landmark of Albay is once again presenting signs of activity. Currently at Alert Level 1, the volcano’s first recorded eruption was as early as 1616; its last was during the year 2007. Recent developments however may induce the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to increase the current alert level.

In the past 24 hours alone, PHIVOLCS has already documented four low frequency volcanic earthquakes. Partnered with this is information coming from Ed Laguerta, PHIVOLCS volcanologist, that the magma activity in the volcano has increased, resulting into a heightened glow of the crater. A ground deformation survey conducted recently has also shown an inflation in the volcano’s structure.

PHIVOLCS announced that incessant increase in parameters such as speed of release of sulfur dioxide could jump the present alert level. Precautions are now being taken as tourists and residents are warned not to enter specified danger zones. With the volcano’s recent activities, it is entirely probable that a phreatic explosion would occur. This explosion is due to magma heating water below the ground. The water then turns to steam powering the blast.

The volcano’s most destructive eruption yet was during the year 1814 causing the death of more than 2,000 people. The most recent one however, occurring in 2007 was minor without apparent loss of life. Before that though, alerts were raised as high as level 4, with the government initiating the evacuation of almost 40,000 residents.

As of now, Mayon Volcano is constantly being monitored for recent changes indicating whether or not arrangements for the assurance of people’s safety should be made.
