The Philippine Eagle Nature Center (PENC) is one of the most trafficked spot in Davao City. The center houses a variety of eagle that was once known as the monkey-eating eagle. The name was coined because of the eagle’s diet which consists of the primate kind. However, further observations have led to the knowledge that monkeys are not their only food choice.

 

Also known as Haribon, a combination of sorts of the words “Hari” and “Ibon” meaning “King” and “Bird” respectively. With its maximum wingspan reaching about 84 inches (7 feet) and an average height of 36 inches (3 feet), the world’s largest eagle truly paints a majestic appearance.

PENC currently has more than 30 eagles within its premises. Not only that, the site also offers other kind of animals aside from the ever popular Philippine Eagle. The place itself comprises of a nice trek around clean and peaceful surroundings accompanied by a rich flora backdrop. Word to the wise though, before visiting the site, make sure to bring a camera with excellent zoom capacities. This is because the place where the eagles are kept are quite large, allowing them space to spread their wings. Chances of the birds going down to attend picture taking is highly unlikely.

The site is open even during holidays, maintaining regular hours from 8 to 5 pm. Instead of just dropping in though, it would be better to call beforehand. This would give you the chance to ask about the schedule of other services such as talks with the eagles’ keeper or actually watching these splendid creatures fly through the air without the restriction of a cage.

And when you’re finally done with the adventure, souvenir shops are available nearby. Objects ranging from key chains to t-shirts can be had at a reasonable price.
