Five Reasons to Visit the Underground River 1. The 7 Wonders
Really, would you wait until voting is over before visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site? The Underground River falling under the Forests/National Parks/Nature Reserves category currently occupies the number two spot in the N7W. Inside the cave are large formations of stalactites and stalagmites, some even stating that the shapes form religious figures.
2. The Flora
A total of eight out of the thirteen forest types found in Asia can be seen here, ranging from riverine forest, beach forest, mangrove forest, forest over limestone soils and much more.
3. The Fauna
More than half of the bird genus in Palawan can be sited in the park. Species such as the monitor lizard and green crested lizard are fairly common in the area. In the cave itself are about nine different species of bats.
4. The People
Inhabitants of Palawan are eager to show off the subterranean park. Hence, you will find not only pleasant smiles from Palaweños but also enthusiastic comments and tidbits regarding the site. Questions are pleasantly welcomed and satisfyingly answered by anyone from the island.
5. The Road Trip
Before reaching Underground River, visitors must first land in Puerto Princesa City where you could get most amenities for the perfect trip. After that is a 50 kilometer road trip to Sabang followed by a short trek to the park’s entrance. With the roads recently paved in anticipation of visitors and eye-catching sites along the way, getting there is guaranteed to be as fun as being there.
